The tuition hasn't been going as well as I hoped it would. For a while, I was giving tuition to two boys in boarding every Sunday morning and afternoon. One was improving quite well but the other still continued to struggle. By the end of term 2, I don't know if he got extra help besides my limited knowledge of what he needed to know for the test, however he managed to start passing and is improving his grades in the sciences. This may also be because he got help from a friend in the same year as him, who is obviously more familiar with the changed IGCSE syllabus. Either way, he is improving. However, there were very little tuition session in boarding, possibly due to the frantic feeling around the boarding house as we prepared to move at the end of this term (2a). I am happy with his improvement in grades, however I wish to still give him tuition if he needs it more.
The other boy, who's only weak spot was biology, was improving well with the extra tuition I am giving him. In our sessions, we mainly think of ways he could study on his own (as I am becoming more and more busy with my IB subjects) as well as revise what he learned that week. Before our sessions, the thing I ask him to do is to think of any questions he has about what he learned that week, and I will answer them in the session. He does this and I explain to him the concept in ways that he would understand it. One example I used is that I explained how two complex molecules could join to make one using the example of cars, as he is very interested in luxury and sports cars. I always tell him that he is welcome to ask me any questions he has during the week, about whatever concept or even something that isn't related to what he is studying. I also tell the other boy this. This seems to make them a bit more relieved.
It is now the second half of term 2 and I am not happy with the lack of sessions that have been set up. I think that I should try maybe to reach out to them more, however I am now busy at the times now that we had previously arranged. Perhaps it would be easier to allow the boys to come to me for help anytime they wanted to revise or ask questions. Both are English-Second Language and a few times I have had to help them phrase definitions of processes or to help them understand words and phrases. If I tell them that I will be able to answer their questions during set times every day, I think they may approach me more with their questions and troubles in biology and chemistry.
